Heartworm Prevention is essential year-round for pets in our area. Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes. Heartworm disease is costly to treat, can shorten your pet's lifespan, and can be fatal if left untreated.

Heartworm Prevention comes in multiple different forms, including monthly chewable pills, topical "spot on" medications, as well as an injectable medication that is given every 6 or 12 months.

Some preventatives only prevent heartworms, while some protect pets from heartworm, intestinal parasites, fleas, ticks or mites.

Heartworm Prevention Options

Some of the options we have available in-clinic include:

Proheart 12

Proheart is an injection that prevents heartworms for 12 months and treats existing hookworm infections at the time of injection.

This is a great option if you have trouble remembering to give a monthly prevention. Proheart 12 can safely be given along with vaccinations during your pet's annual visit, saving you extra trips to the vet.

Simparica TRIO

Simparica TRIO is another great option, which combines heartworm prevention along with intestinal parasite prevention for hookworms and roundworms, as well as prevention against fleas and ticks.  It is a monthly chewable tablet that is well accepted by most dogs.

Sentinel Spectrum

Sentinel Spectrum provides a very affordable, broad-spectrum coverage against heartworms, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms in a monthly chew. While it does not kill adult fleas, Sentinel Spectrum helps control flea infestations by preventing flea eggs from developing.

Nexgard Combo (Cats)

Nexgard Combo is a fantastic product that provides comprehensive protection for our cats against heartworms, hookworm, roundworms, tapeworms, fleas, ticks and ear mites!

Flea and Tick Prevention
Fleas and ticks are more than just an annoyance. These nasty critters cause scratching, licking, skin conditions such as Flea Allergy Dermatitis, as well as transmit tapeworms to dogs and cats. Fleas can also transmit serious diseases to humans, such as Cat Scratch Disease, Murine thyphus, and plague.

Ticks can cause a number of diseases such as Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. We recommend all pets receive monthly flea and ticks prevention. There are many options available for flea and tick control, including prescription-only oral chews or tablets, topical treatments, as well as a 12-month injection (Bravecto Quantum).

Bravecto Quantum (12-month)

Bravecto Quantum is an injection that prevents fleas and ticks* for 12 months. Bravecto Quantum is safe to given along with vaccinations during your dog's annual visit. It can even be given along with Proheart to give your dog year-long prevention against heartworms, fleas and ticks.

Bravecto Chews (12 week)

Bravecto Chews are a great option that treats and prevents fleas and ticks for 12 weeks for dogs aged 6 months and older. This long timeframe helps disrupt the flea life cycle. It is fast-acting, safe and easy to give in a pork flavored chew.

We also carry Bravecto Monthly for our puppies less than 6 months of age, with the same great protection given once per month.

Simparica (Monthly)

Simparica is an affordable flavored tablet that provides monthly flea and tick protection in a chewable tablet. Simparica starts killing fleas within 3 hours and ticks within 8 hours and lasts for 35 days.
