Veterinary Technician / Assistant
Description
The Technician / Assistant performs a wide variety of patient and client-care duties, conducts patient assessments, provides surgical assistance, anesthetizes and performs treatments under the direction of the veterinarian. They maintain a high standard of patient care, communicating clearly with the veterinarians, other hospital personnel, and clients to ensure that patients receive the care they need.

The Technician / Assistant performs a wide variety of patient and client-care duties, conducts patient assessments, provides surgical assistance, anesthetizes and performs treatments under the direction of the veterinarian. They maintain a high standard of patient care, communicating clearly with the veterinarians, other hospital personnel, and clients to ensure that patients receive the care they need.
Essential Duties
- Perform routine veterinary medical procedures (e.g. collect samples, draw, blood, place IV catheters, administer injections)
- Safely restrain patients for examinations and a variety of treatments or procedures
- Maintains knowledge of commonly used veterinary terminology, procedures, and routine preventive care, products, medications and hospital services
- Excellent interpersonal communication and a commitment to outstanding client service
- Ability to show empathy towards clients and treat animals with respect and compassion
- Remains professional while being exposed to unpleasant odors and noises, blood, vomit and feces
- Ability to stay on task, organized, work independently and energetically for entire shift, possibly exceeding 8-10 hours per day.
- Ability to lift objects weighing 40 pounds without assistance and objects weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time and frequently bend, kneel or stoop. May be exposed to bites, scratches, animal waste and contagious diseases.
